I am historically pretty lousy at taking care of myself. I tend not to sleep enough. I'll eat terrible food. I'll skip meals. I've fasted whole days, unintentionally. I'll sit at my desk for like all of my waking hours.
When I was younger, and my mom did the cooking, and I ate mostly Korean food, this wasn't that bad. Living with Crystal, and eating whatever bullshit she'll tolerate eating, this is killing me.
When your meals are packed with highly nutritious fresh and fermented vegetables and fish and whatever other good protein sources, you can skip eating sometimes, and it's no big deal.
When you're eating a more typical American diet of processed crap with like only the micronutrients that are fortified in, I find it's really hard to just sustain mental focus, and generally feel okay. I'd be surprised if I'm not deficient on a bunch of nutrients right now.
Sometimes I've done this just as a matter of cost savings. Freelance is inherently unstable, and sometimes you have lean times, and it can be hard to resist optimizing for calories when you're spending money on food. But god damn it, it's worth it.
So, this is mostly a note to myself. Skimp on something, anything else, if you have to. Eat a damn vegetable. Buy and cook real food. And don't let Crystal keep killing herself, either.
